Most business owners assume a bad website is better than no website. It’s not always true.

A website that loads slowly, looks outdated, or doesn’t work on mobile isn’t neutral. It’s actively sending customers somewhere else. And the frustrating part is you probably won’t know it’s happening, because the people it’s turning off aren’t calling to tell you why.

Here are five signs your current website might be working against you, and what to do about each one.

1. It loads slowly

If your site takes more than three seconds to load, a significant chunk of your visitors have already left. Research consistently shows that most people will abandon a slow site before it even finishes loading, and they won’t come back.

Speed matters even more for local searches. Someone searching for a plumber in Mackay or a tour operator in Airlie Beach is usually on their phone, often on a mobile connection. A slow site on mobile is a broken experience.

How to check
Search “Google PageSpeed Insights” and run your URL through the free tool. Anything under 50 on mobile is worth addressing. Common culprits: oversized images, too many plugins, cheap shared hosting, or a theme carrying a lot of unnecessary code.

2. It looks broken on mobile

Over 60% of web traffic now comes from phones. If your website was built more than a few years ago and hasn’t been updated, there’s a reasonable chance it doesn’t display properly on a small screen.

That means text that’s too small to read, buttons that are impossible to tap, images that overflow the screen, or a layout that just looks wrong. For a visitor on their phone trying to find your number or book a service, any of those things is enough to make them give up.

How to check
Pull up your own website on your phone right now. Navigate through it like a customer would. If anything feels awkward or frustrating, your customers are feeling it too.

3. It doesn't show up on Google

If someone searches for your trade or service in your area and you’re not on the first page of results, you’re essentially invisible. Most people never click to page two.

A website that wasn’t built with SEO in mind won’t rank. That means no page titles, no meta descriptions, no Google Search Console setup, no consideration for the keywords your customers are actually typing. It might exist, but Google doesn’t know what to do with it.

How to check
Search for “[your service] [your suburb]” in a private browser window. If you’re not on page one, your SEO needs work. Also search your business name directly. If a basic Google search doesn’t surface your site near the top, something is wrong.

4. Your contact form doesn't work

This one is more common than you’d think. A contact form that silently fails, sends emails to a spam folder, or never got set up properly can mean months of lost enquiries with no indication anything’s wrong.

The other version of this problem is a website with no clear way to get in touch at all. No form, no click-to-call button, just an email address buried in small text at the bottom of the page.

How to check
Fill in your own contact form and see if you receive it. Do it from a different email address so it doesn’t get auto-filtered. If you haven’t tested it recently, test it today.

5. It looks like it was built ten years ago

Design trends move fast. What looked modern in 2014 looks dated in 2025, and visitors notice, even if they can’t articulate exactly why. An outdated site signals, fairly or not, that the business behind it might also be behind the times.

This matters especially for businesses where trust is a factor before someone commits. A tradie asking for a significant quote, a professional service charging by the hour, a tour operator taking an upfront booking. First impressions happen online now, and a site that looks rough around the edges creates doubt.

How to check
Look at your competitors’ websites. Then look at yours. If theirs look notably cleaner, faster, or more professional, that gap is costing you.

So what do you do about it?

Some of these issues are fixable with a few adjustments. Others are a sign that the underlying website needs to be rebuilt properly.

If your site is ticking two or more of these boxes, it’s worth getting an honest assessment. Not a sales pitch, just a straight read on what’s actually causing problems and what it would take to fix them.

We work with businesses across the Whitsundays and Mackay who’ve had exactly this experience. Old site, unclear results, suspicion that it’s not helping. We look at what’s there, tell you what we’d do, and give you a fixed price to do it.
