Most web designers won’t give you a straight answer. Here’s an honest timeline, and what actually causes delays.
The short answer is three to six weeks for most small business websites. But the honest answer is: it depends on you as much as it depends on your web designer.
Here’s a straight breakdown of how a website project actually works, what’s happening in each phase, and what actually slows things down.
The six phases of a website build
You fill in a form, we come back with a detailed proposal. Scope, pages, price, timeline. All in writing before anything starts.
You provide your logo, photos, and any existing content. This is the phase that most often causes delays. More on that below.
We build your homepage on a private staging site. You review it, give feedback, we refine. One round of changes at this stage.
Once the homepage is approved, we build out all remaining pages. SEO setup, analytics, contact forms. Everything gets configured.
You review the full site and request changes. Two rounds of revisions are included. Most clients use one.
Final payment clears, we handle the go-live. Domain pointed, SSL active, site live. You get a walkthrough video of your finished site.
What actually causes delays
Most blown timelines come from the same handful of things. None of them are the designer’s fault. Knowing them upfront means you can avoid them.
The fastest builds we’ve done were the ones where the client had their content ready and responded to feedback the same day. The slowest? Still waiting on a logo after three weeks.
What if you need it faster?
Three weeks is achievable if content is ready on day one and you can turn feedback around quickly. Some of our builds have launched in under three weeks for exactly that reason.
If you have a hard deadline (a trade show, a season opening, a business launch), tell us upfront. We’ll structure the project around it and flag if anything needs to move faster on your end to make it happen.
One thing to avoid: booking a web designer in the week you need the site live. Quality work takes time, and rushing always shows. Give yourself six weeks minimum, eight if you’re not sure when your content will be ready.
What we need from you to get started
The more of this you have ready, the faster your project moves:
-
Your logo (vector file or high-res PNG)
-
Photos of your work, team, or premises (phone shots are fine to start)
-
A rough idea of the pages you need (home, about, services, contact is a great start)
-
A couple of websites you like the look of (gives us a feel for your style)
- Your target launch date (even approximate)
You don’t need everything perfect before we start. But having the basics ready means we can move fast. Most of our clients want that.
